at first blush

30 May

I could tell at first blush

and from the swelling beneath

your sweater

the scratches upon your cheek

hidden beneath the glamour

how could so much anger and hatred

be directed at someone so

obviously innocent

helpless and sweet

I could tell at second blush

how far into the shame

she had allowed herself to sink

not good enough

not the right body

not the right face

to be given entrance into paradise

and the abuse began

I could tell at third blush

and held her close in spite of

her curses and her struggle

she is more than good enough

and no one deserves this

a victim should never feel shame

even if

the victim and the perpetrator

are the same
