a stranger’s life

4 Dec

why do we smile

when we see a stranger

carrying home their Christmas tree?

do we imagine

the joy which fills his or her heart

and how this sparks some joy

within our own as well?

maybe this stranger views his task

as a chore, an unwanted obligation

or maybe it is just an empty habit

formed over so many years

but no

we prefer to feel a ribbon of love

extending from them to ourselves

a ribbon of shared humanity

and hope for something more

than what meets our eyes and ears

a lovely home

deep inside us all

which all of us young and old

thin and wide

vanilla, chocolate, butterscotch and strawberry

can share
