with considerable consternation

one cannot be too careful these days

what with all this bung water and

skin paste hawked upon each street corner

some kind of backseat bravado

some kind of upright belly beat

slow and mellow

to serve as a counterpoint to the

screams of the commercial appeal

there are too many meat bags to honor

and someday he’ll have to explain

how he kept his shoes clean

while the rest of us wallowed in fist slop

and yellowed refrains

within this torn stinking sack of a nation
